add history for past trends with graphs
Lets have a look back to past trends, this could be interesting for research and for regularly returning trends (i.e. christmas)

You should have a conference tag!
In addition to Sports, Technology, etc. you should have an option to choose Conference because so many hashtags are being used for discussion of conferences (like TC50, #140conf, etc.). Some are technology conference but others are more social media or on other subjects where none of your tags fits.
You also might consider adding TweetChat or Webinar for hashtags used for live conversations on Twitter and an option to "untag" a TT that has been tagged inaccurately. Once an option is chosen, the editor can only choose another tag and sometimes none of the choices fits.

make it easy to see the first tweets that mentioned a trending topic
the problem with weird trending topics is that you don't know why they started trending. it would be cool to be able to see who the first people to tweet about it would be, and follow how it grew. as it is now, you would have to scroll all the way through every tweet until the very beginning.

Split the a general description of a trending topic from the reason it is trending right now.
The general description could be auto-snagged from Wikipedia or user-added - e.g. the information a person is a singer or television presenter, or the expansion of the acronym naming an event - and then a second section could explain why it is trending today - e.g. they just appeared on a certain show, or someone notable just spoke at the event.

Top Twitter trends listed on WTT are not the same as those on Twitter
Specifically, the weird #eggplant topic has been trending all morning (and probably last night). Its definition shows it to be an active topic but it's not listed in your top 10 or on the front page at all. Your list should really be in sync with Twitter's list, no matter how ludicrous the topic unless Twitter yanks the topic off its List.

forum discussion for each trend
just like on any forum-type news sites people would discuss each topic/newsbit and share their opinions

define trends via twitter
E.g. I could tweet @whatthetrend 3764 <the trend> is because...
3764 being the trend id. <the trend> would have to include the trend text. Then you could do a simple cross check of id and trend before posting in order to stop spam.
Then list tweeters and their suggestions on the web page. People can click to RT a suggestion or to contact the tweeter.7 votes -
Paralels in tweets & reports
Try to create search algorithms to identify closely related articles and tweets (For example: The topic "Conan" is tweeted because of the videogame "Age of Conan" as well as because of late night talker "Conan O´Brien"). Identifying these different reasons for one trending keyword automatically would be nice.

Add a Mass Block Option for Spam Bot driven trends blocking twits run by those bots
Blocking spam bots in twitter is a better way for people to fight spam, tip off twitter about spammers, and clear up clutter in their stream. If more people block spammers, eventually the metric of being blocked by large numbers of people will help filter for 'real' trends

let users filter their RSS feeds
... or, create an RSS feed option that filters out the jokes and NSFW stuff. I find the What the Trend feed super-useful for news, but the NSFW factor almost ruins it.

Create a nicer error page when a trend doesn't exist yet
change the error page when trendin topic does not exist. ex : http://www.whatthetrend.com/trend/%23bpt09
At the moment there is a blank page saying:
"sorry, the page you requested does not exist"I think people would use more often your website if it keeps the same template even if the trending topic is not in your database. It's a very useful website, we are developing a tool and we would like to add links to your website but due to this error page we will not do it yet. I think we are not the only one thinking that.
Would be great…

Problem with beta
For some reason, my edits in the Beta version appear in the history of the Topic but the Topic itself isn't altered, it's an older version. This is seconds after I've made the edit so it's not like someone reversed the edit. Also, I haven't hit my edit "limit", it was only the 3rd edit I made. I've worked in the Beta version before with no problem.
